Butterfly pastry is a specialty of Shanghai. But do you know there is even a skills competition among the pastry cooks? Almost all bakeries and companies making butterfly pastry took part in the Butterfly Pastry Skills Competition this year.
It was not only about skills, but also creativity. From mini versions of butterfly pastry (which are as tiny as a nail) to butterfly pastry used for state banquets, they have different shapes, colors, and sizes.
The butterfly pastry, as usual, is coated with sugar. But the tiny butterfly pastry is different. “It tastes salty without sugar. Though it looks tiny, there are 256 layers of pastry skin,” said the cook.
