The city is due for rain from Friday, with some areas in the north and the west expected to receive up to 50 millimeters in an hour, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau says.

The rain will be accompanied by lightning and gale-force winds. The city's flood control office warns residents to be on the alert for falling objects blown by the strong winds.

Friday's maximum is forecast to hit 27 degrees Celsius.
