Uruguay promotes South America's 'Pearl'
From:Shine  |  2018-11-07 08:29

Uruguay has brought more than 20 entrepreneurs to the China International Import Expo and set up booths to promote the "Pearl of South America" and boost exports.

This year is the 30th anniversary of Uruguay's diplomatic ties with China and it hopes that through the CIIE, it can further deepen cooperation on commerce and trade.

"In recent years, Uruguay has a deeper relationship with China, not only on commerce and trade but also in all aspects of life," said Rodolfo Nin Novoa, Uruguay's Foreign Minister. "Uruguay is a very reliable food producer and has a wide product variety such as wine, beef, oil and some other kinds of food." It is also famous for products such as wool, timber and other building materials, he added.

He said China was now Uruguay's most important trading partner. At the expo, it has a country pavilion and one for Uruguayan beef and other agricultural produce.

Visitors can enjoy Uruguayan wine and watch a modern take on the country's traditional music, with jazz and electronic music and robot dancers.

Antonio Carambula, president of Uruguayan investment and export promotion committee Uruguay XXI, said 20 percent of their export businesses are involved in the Chinese market and the 30-year-old friendship with China enabled them to achieve progress and development.

"Chinese consumers are confident in us and we hope to further consolidate this good trend," said Carambula. "Uruguay combines science and technology with nature to provide safe and high-quality food products. We have competitiveness on innovation and talents and are able to offer services to countries in the world."

Fernando Lugris, Uruguay's Ambassador to China, said Uruguay was the first country in Latin America to join China's Belt and Road initiative. "There are two reasons for us to participate in the Belt and Road initiative. One is that Uruguay is a country of intelligent agriculture and our production in agriculture, food and marine products is very high. Joining this strategy can allow us to bring our products to China. Moreover, we have many free ports and free airports which can help realize lots of commercial cooperation. Uruguay is a logistics center which is stable and reliable for Chinese enterprises to enter a larger market."
