A woman has been caught for allegedly stealing a jacket from a co-passenger on a train, Shanghai railway police said on Thursday.

A university student filed a report with railway police at Jinshanwei this Monday evening after her coat was stolen when she was taking the C3673 train from Shanghai South Railway Station to Jinshanwei on the same day.

The young woman said she put her black down jacket on the overhead shelf and fell asleep in her seat, but woke up to realize her coat was missing.

She said she had about 600 yuan (US$88) in cash, a transportation card and some cosmetics in the pockets.

After watching 20 hours of video footage from exits, entries, security check points and platforms of all eight stations between the two stations, police found that a woman who took the train from Shanghai South Railway Station had a black jacket in her arms when she got off at Tinglin station, and she was not carrying it when she entered.

With the assistance of colleagues from other police stations, officers tracked the suspect down to her home on Wednesday evening and caught her.

Police said they found the stolen jacket in her home with the objectsstill in the pockets. The suspect, surnamed Zou, has confessed, police said.
