Heavy weekend rain to hit Shanghai as typhoon to make landfall in south
From:Shine  |  2019-08-08 17:29

Thick clouds hover above the high-rises in Shanghai on Thursday.

A blue alert for typhoon was issued by Shanghai Meteorological Bureau at 5pm on Thursday.

The ninth typhoon of the year,Lekima, has grown into a super typhoon, reported the National Meteorological Center of CMA on Thursday morning.

The weather authority expects Lekima to make landfall in the northeast Zhejiang Province on Saturday morning. But it didn’t rule out the possibility the typhoon will continue moving north.

From Friday night till Sunday morning, heavy rain will hit Shanghai. Level-10 gales may impact the downtown area, while in coastal areas gales will reach level 14.

The city’s flood prevention authority urged all districts and government bodies to take precautions.

Workers and tourists at coastal areas, such as the Yangshan Deep-Water Port, Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal and tidal-flat areas near the shore, will be evacuated when the weather become extreme.

All boats are urged to dock. Construction sites should halt operation if the weather becomes extreme.

The flood prevention authority also urged districts to thoroughly inspect high-rise objects, such as outdoor units of air-conditioners, billboards, light boxes and the curtain walls of high-rise buildings.

The city has prepared pumps and emergency teams to drain water at flood points.

Shanghai’s two major airports have taken measures.

The Shanghai Airport Authority said it had stabilized rooftop facilities, hanging signs, curtain-wall glasses, advertisement boards and outdoor facilities. Airlines have been asked to ensure the safety of berthing aircraft during a typhoon.

Sewage and rainwater pipes at Hongqiao airport, which is more vulnerable to rainstorms and typhoons, have been dredged to prevent flooding.

Waterways around the airport have also been lowered to ensure water on the runways can be drained immediately.

Dredging and cleaning machines have been prepared at both airports to ensure sewage ditches remain unblocked. They have cleaned up 15,600 cubic meters of sludge ahead of the rainy season, the authority said.

Flight information will be published on the airport authority’s social network platforms and official website at www.shanghaiairport.com.

Passengers are also advised to check with airlines about flight information.
