Small businesses ordered to improve virus prevention measures

Urban management and law enforcement officials inspect a street-level business.

About 12,000 of Shanghai's small, streetside businesses, or about 14 percent of those that have resumed operation, have been ordered to improve their coronavirus prevention measures, Shanghai's urban management and law enforcement authorities said on Wednesday.

As of Tuesday, over one-third of Shanghai's streetside storefronts, including small retailers and businesses not located inside shopping malls or office buildings, had reopened, the Shanghai Urban Management and Law Enforcement Bureau said.

"Business operators returning to Shanghai must register their health information, and those from key infection areas must undergo 14-day quarantine at home," Xu Zhihu, director of the bureau, told a press conference on Wednesday.

"Business operators must wear masks and check their temperatures daily, and they are alsorequired to ensure a sanitary environment at their business venues and conduct disinfection daily," Xu added.

Urban management and law enforcement officials across the city have stepped up daily patrols and inspections on street-level businesses, and over 12,000 were found to have failed to take appropriate measures, said Xu.

"For businesses that have not reopened, inspectors have ordered them to do so only when they have implemented health information registration or home quarantine," said Xu.

A total of 681,087 street-side businesses, office buildings, construction sites, wet markets, agricultural produce markets, residential complexes and streets across the city have been inspected by urban management and law enforcement officials since the outbreak.

"All-around screening is conducted to eliminate pneumonia infection risks," said Xu.

Platforms sharing the information of businesses and personnel have been established, allowing different government authorities to follow the opening information, health status and prevention measures of street-side businesses, Xu said.

A total of 140 cases involving illegal street vendors have been busted by the city's urban management and law enforcement authorities since the outbreak, and 11 regarded sales of substandard and fake facial masks, according to the bureau.

In total, 8,748 substandard and fake facial masks were seized by authorities.

The remaining cases involved illegal live poultry sales and raising, according to the bureau.
