Market watchdog looking out for consumers
From:Shine  |  2020-06-27 18:29

Clothing, food, telecommunications products, Internet services and home furnishing products topped the list of complaints during the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday, with the majority involving online consumption, the city market watchdog reported on Saturday.

The Shanghai Administration for Market Regulation received 3,226 complaints and tip-offs in total during the holiday, a rise of 44 percent from the same period last year.

Among the complaints, 82 percent related to online consumption, with the majority for clothing and shoes, food, telecommunications products, home furnishing products and computers.

After-sales services, contract fulfillment, product quality and promotion tricks drew the ire of consumers.

More than 260 complaints were related to food, covering food quality, packaging, delivery and after-sales services. Twenty complaints related tozongzi, a traditional festival food made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in leaves.

Failure to redeem zongzi coupons and delayed delivery of zongzi orders on e-commerce platforms drew complaints.

Another 25 complaints related toweb-casts, involving quality flaws of products bought on live-streaming broadcasts, dishonest acts of businesses and poor after-sales services.

Among them, a consumer said that a jade bracelet bought on a web-cast was made of different materials to what the business promised.

These complaints and tip-offs are being tackled by district market watchdogs and consumer councils.
