City airports return to normal

OPERATIONS at Shanghai’s two airports gradually returned to normal early yesterday as Typhoon Hagupit moved away from the city.

The fourth typhoon this year weakened to a tropical depression by 5am and moved toward the Yellow Sea in East China, according to the National Meteorological Center.

A total of 66 inbound and outbound flights had been canceled at Pudong and Hongqiao international airports as of 11am this morning.

As rainfall tapered off, takeoffs and landings at both airports returned to normal. By noon, visibility rose to more than 1 kilometer at theHongqiao airport and 10 kilometers at the Pudong airport, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.

Shanghai Meteorological Bureau revoked the alert at 11am and the flood prevention bureau lowered its emergency response level at noon.

Torrential rain of over 140 millimeters in 12 hours was recorded at 24 of the city’s 723 weather stations while more than half the stations detected rainstorms of 30mm to 70mm falls in a 12-hour period.

The rain fell mainly in Jinshan,Fengxianand Songjiang districts.

The storm overturned 460 trees and damaged another 1,410 across the city, according to the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.

About 2,000 streets vulnerable to flooding were cleared by 27,000 sanitation workers.
