Foreigners ride through rice paddy fields.

Foreign residents in Pudong were invited to explore the rural side of the modern area over the weekend.

The 42 foreign families from 12 countries, including US, Poland and Malaysia, enjoyed a rural weekend getaway in the Haishen Village of Huinan Town.

They rode through rice paddy fields to breathe fresh air and see a huge rice "painting." Local farmers used various rice strains to create images such as Pudong’s iconic skyline and the landmark Nanpu Bridge to celebrate 30 years of prosperity in Pudong.

They visited local history museum and an exhibition featuring hats, paintings and other items woven from local homespun fabric that is listed among Pudong’s intangible cultural heritage.

They also learned about China’s traditional 24 solar terms, and how to make Chinese knots and dough figurine.

They had a rural-style lunch at local resident Chen Kejuan’s home and eatery. They were treated with locally-planted vegetables such as pumpkin, corn and green soybean as well as local delicacies such as wonton, pork bone soup and steamed rice with meat and greens.

The event is part of a series held by Pudong to celebrate the 2020 Chinese Farmers’ Harvest Festival.

To encourage more people to experience its rural charm, Pudong has designed a special rural tourist route. It links popular sites including the ancient watertown of Xinchang, the former dwelling of renowned translator Fu Lei, and the Zhoupu Flower Sea which features 33 hectares of blossoms in four seasons.
