Police warn of holiday traffic congestion

Travelers heading toChongmingDistrict during the national holidays may face congestion of up to 17 hours on expressways, police said as they advised tourists to stagger their trips to avoid heavy traffic.

Due to the pandemic, trips to nearby suburbs, particularlyChongmingwith its richecolifestyle, are favored by many parents as their children would have to undergo 14 days of quarantine if they left the city.

Expressways heading toChongming,including G1501 near NorthYuanhangRoad, S20 and G2, are the mostlikelyto experience heavy traffic.

Congestionis predicted between 11am and 12pm on September 30 at sections connectingWuzhongAvenue,LongdongRoad and Shanghai-Chongming-SuzhouOverpass, as well asWuningRoad and Shanghai-NingboOverpass.

On September 6, a 17-hour traffic jam is predicted between Chenhai Highway and G1501 exits, with majorcongestion atChongqi Bridge, ZhenbeiRoad andJiasongRoad interchanges.

Due to preparations for the National Flower Expo next year inChongming, many roads are under construction. The police released a map indicating these areas to help travelers.

To ensure traffic flow on the G40, electronic and video surveillance equipment will be used to manage illegal activities such as using emergency lanes.

To avoidcongestionof Yangtze River Bridge, travelers are being advised to take publictransportincluding ferries.

A joint command team including police inChongmingand the Pudong New Area, and firefighters fromChangxingIsland and ShanghaiChengtouhas been set up to cope with road accidents, along with emergency facilities such as tow trucks and cranes.
