Shanghai's tourism market is gaining momentum during the National Day holiday.

The city welcomed 5.28 million visits in the first four days of the eight-day holiday with countryside tourism gaining popularity, the city's cultural and tourism authorities said on Sunday afternoon.

More than 150 major tourist attractions across the city received 4.19 million visits from tourists and residents over the four days, up 3 percent from the same period last year, according to the Shanghai Administration of Culture and Tourism.

Scenic spots onChongming Island recorded a combined 227,800 visits, surging 290 percent from the same period last year, and the Shanghai International Resort had 352,200 visits, up 46.8 percent, according to the administration.

The Sheshan National Tourist Resort welcomed 314,700 visits, growing 9.4 percent. Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden had 56,000, soaring 31 percent.

The Bund, Yuyuan Garden and Lujiazui had 756,800, 163,000 and 768,200 visits respectively, while Huangpu River cruises received 75,900 visits, according to the administration.

The Huangpu riverfront areas, spanning five districts, had 2.2 million visits in total.

During the holiday, 141 cultural and tourism activities are staged in the city, the administration said.

A total of 93 museums across the city recorded 367,000 visits in total, and 55 galleries had 116,800 visits.

In the first three days of the holiday, the occupancy rate of hotels in the city hit 70 percent, posing a growth of 13.5 percent from the same period last year.

Countryside, cultural, parent-child and suburban ancient towns are gaining popularity during the holiday.

In total, countryside parks received 171,900 visits, and parks across the city had 3.34 million.

Ancient towns such as Zhujiajiao, Fengjing, Qibao and Xinchang are popular destinations among residents and tourists.

"My husband and I usually travel overseas during the holiday period, and we were in Switzerland at the same time last year," said Yan Ting, a Shanghai office worker."Due to the pandemic, we could not travel overseas so we decide to explore the city's suburb instead."

The couple visited Zhujiajiaowatertown on the third day of the holiday, taking a stroll on ancient bridges and sipping tea at local tea houses.

"There are so many people, but walking out and taking a trip is still a pleasant thing," said Yan. "We are slowing down our pace and exploring the hidden beauty of the city."

The city's minsu (Chinese version of B&B) are almost fully booked during the holiday.
