Foreign college students become teachers in SH, presenting world culture in Chinese
By:Wang Jiaye  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2016-03-24 14:18

What elements constitute the national flags of different countries? How to appreciate the thousand-year-old artworks? Interesting lessons were taking place at the class of the Experimental School attached to Donghua University (DHFX) in Shanghai, March 24, 2016. Strikingly, the teachers here were foreigners though they spoke fluent Chinese language.

Actually, these teachers are international students now studying in Donghua University and also among the first batch of teachers in the educational project titled "Laowai Take You to See the World". Since last October, they have given lessons to Chinese children at DHFX, presenting customs and practices all over the world.

The foreign teachers come from 8 countries, that is, Djibouti, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Russia and Bangladesh. They are well prepared for the lessons - making courseware, collecting photos and showing beautiful dress. The students are deeply impressed by the lively style of the lecturers.

Speaking of the project, Dawu and Sophia from Sudan said that they appreciate the scholarship support from China’s government and the teachers' help. "The project provides us opportunity to do something for China and to know more about China", they said.

In spare time, these Laowai teachers also become friends with the Chinese children. Elias from Kyrgyzstan presented his beloved traditional headwear to his student as gift.

The project hosted by Donghua and its attached school is aimed to enhance the interaction between international students and campuses in Shanghai.

Donghua University is among the first batch of universities recruiting foreign students. Currently, there are more than 4700 international students from over 140 countries.
