He decided to be an astronaut at the age of 9 and realized the first flight after 26 years. He shot the first space MV at the International Space Station (ISS) and took a night view of Shanghai. He is a good friend of Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei and also an expert popularizing space information for millions on social media...Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian astronaut and the first Canadian commander of ISS recently came to Shanghai for his family, and told his interesting and unforgettable space story.

Flying in space is not as comfortable as you imagine

During Hadfield's 21-year-long astronaut career, he flew into space for three times, respectively in 1995, 2001 and 2012/2013. In the third flight, he served as the commander of ISS and stayed for six months.

Did you feel comfortable in the spacecraft? Hadfield drew an interesting analogy that it’s like sitting in a truck. Without gravity, things behave different from that on earth. If you pull knees up to chest, you can fly like jelly water, Hadfield pointed at a photo and said.

Hadfield was Canada's first space walker. He said that it felt really uncomfortable when walking in space. He constantly came across shimmering tiny particles in the universe. It was 150 degrees Celsius on his right arm while 150 degrees below zero on the left arm. Moreover, the chairs may encounter crash during the process of landing.

Taking a night view of Shanghai

"This is Shanghai. I think you can find where the Bund is", Hadfield showed a picture of Shanghai taken in space and recalled the situation at that time. It was February 2013, "I am becoming across Turkey. I think it is a nice spot to be a nice night over China, so I get my camera ready over Turkey". Actually, the spaceship flew fast and it took only five minutes to cross China.

"I was floating upside-down in the spaceship and looking out of the big window all the cities in the night across China in the 5 minutes", Hadfield said that the camera floated, he worried about the heartbeat. He needed to be careful to pose the camera and not make the heartbeat press the shutter.

When asked the feeling of taking the photo, Hadfield said that "it felt like seeing a secret thing because it was such a rare way to see the world; it's like a huge privilege to see the world like that way. And also specially and importantly, my son was living there, I thought taking a picture of my son".

Inspired by his son, popularizing space information on SNS

It is worth mentioning that Hadfield’s eldest son has been living in China for 12 years and now is studying in a university in Hangzhou for a master's degree. He got married with a Chinese lady from Henan and their 7-month-old girl baby was born in Guangzhou.

During the last 25 years, Hadfield has been trying to share space experience in schools and communities with all technologies he could. Most recently, he puts it on social media. "We have a family meeting 5 years ago; my eldest son said you got to communicate using technology and using social media, where a lot of folks got their day-to-day information all around the world, so it would be very effective to let millions of people see what’s happening in space."

Hadfield had posted many pictures taken from ISS on twitter since he entered space at the end of 2012, e.g. his city Toronto, Manhattan and Venice...drawing 300,000 fans. "What is seen from space is amazing. And it’s interesting to see how harmonious the atmosphere is."

In addition, Hadfield wrote 3 books, the earliest one is for children. In 2014, he launched 'You Are Here: Around the World in 92 Minutes' featuring 150 photos of the earth he took from ISS in 2013.

Be proud to realize dream and to be part of the Earth

Hadfield decided to be an astronaut at 9 and realized the first flight after 26 years. And it took 44 years from the decision to become ISS commander. He is very proud to be Canada's first astronaut.

"Exploring the rest of the universe is very interesting, fascinating and challenging. It teaches us to know the whole world, not just the place you've grown". Hadfield said that on Earth, you can find that any idea rises above short-term politics and territory disputes; however, during exploring the universe, people collaborate and work hard to overcome difficulties.

Hadfield said that when he safely returned to the Earth with companions, he felt very proud to see the efforts being rewarded with success. "Everyone is proud where we are from, for the country we represent, and much more proud to be part of the Earth and part of the international team."
