当英式教育遇到中国学生|中英教育合作进入蜜月期

The fourth meeting of the China-UK High Level People-to-People Dialogue was held in Shanghai recently, during which a delegation of 15 leading UK schools and educational organizations, including St Albans, King’s School Canterbury, Sidcot and North London Collegiate School, attended the China-UK Education Development Forum, as part of the “Education is GREAT” campaign. They also met with a large number of Chinese partners in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu to further explore education collaboration opportunities.

当英式教育遇到中国学生,会产生怎样的化学反应?中英两国在教育领域将有哪些新的合作?近日,中英高级别人文交流机制第四次会议在上海举办,开启两国在教育、旅游、文化和创意产业等领域的合作“蜜月期”。期间,由圣奥尔本斯学校、坎特伯雷国王院校、西德科特学校与北伦敦学院学校等15所英国教育院校和机构组成的代表团来沪参加中英教育发展论坛,并到访广州和成都,与中国伙伴面对面,寻求发展新机遇。

What are the features and strengths of a British-style education? What will it offer Chinese students? Why choose British-style schools?
对话英国教育机构负责人:英式教育特色在哪儿?它将为中国学生带来什么?

Vipul Bhargava, an International Schools and Education Technology Specialist at the UK Department of International Trade (DIT) answered these questions statistically, “more than 40% of world leaders studied in the UK, and more than 41% of international schools across the world use the British curriculum.”

英国国际贸易部国际教育和教育科技业务专家Vipul Bhargava用数字作答:“全球有超过40%的国家领导人有在英国求学的经历,这是全球对英国教育优异性的认可”。此外,他介绍说,全球41%的国际学校及双语学校使用英式课程。

King’s School Canterbury is a school with one of the longest traditions and history in Europe. Director Geoff Cocksworth said that they adhere to the idea of “Educating the Whole Person”. The high-quality curriculum, both in and after class, covers all aspects of the growth of the individual, for example, being an effective member of the community, through participation and contribution. Students get a sense of family and receive guidance for the right path for them during their most important developmental stage. “I think when talking with students from China, this approach is a huge attraction for them.”

英国坎特伯雷国王院校是欧洲历史最悠久的中学之一,学校主任Geoff Cocksworth认为,英式教育倡导“全人教育”的理念。学校的课内外课程涵盖学生成长的各方面,包括体育、音乐、户外活动各方面,教会他在群体中生活,在社区中参与和付出,在学生人生最重要的时段里,给予他家的感觉、家长式的教育,引导他正确的人生方向,“我和一些来自中国的学生交流,他们非常喜欢参加社区活动,以及获得来自英国家庭的关怀和引导”。

Geoff Cocksworth pointed out that in the entrance interview for students, they are looking for someone who really understands what British schools offer. Further, they have developed a separated department or curriculum to help overseas students including Chinese, to adapt to UK schools in the first one or two years.

Geoff  Cocksworth指出,在面试时,他们学校特别重视学生本人是否了解接下来他将在此接受怎样的教育,而不仅仅是家长了解。此外,他们学校有一个新举措:建立一个转型课程,帮助来自包括中国在内的外国留学生适应英国的学制,经过一两年后,他们就能无缝融入英国的学制当中了。

Derek Todd, Director of Operations and Finance for St Albans sets his sights on value adding. He stated that they try to know more about Chinese students, by understanding their culture and local context, then ensure they can get the best from both systems.

英国圣奥尔本斯学校运营及财务部总监Derek  Todd着眼于不同教育背景的优势加成,“我们试图更加了解他们。我们发现中国学生非常专注,我们很好奇,并观察这种刻苦与专注将为他们未来的人生带来怎样的成就。我们也非常耐心地去了解学生的文化背景,以及他们在原来的国家成长的环境,希望学生能从两种教育中获得最好的成长。”

Colin Bell, CEO of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS) added that last year approximately 27,500 overseas students, with the majority these students being Chinese, studied in independent schools in the UK. He emphasized that not only are Chinese students welcomed and looked after but these students also contributed greatly to UK culture through exchange and learning.

COBIS(英国国际学校理事会)首席执行官Colin Bell则代表英国的独立教育体系(私立学校)作补充,去年有27500名外国学生进入英国独立教育系统学习,其中有一大部分是中国学生,中国学生在这个系统里面得到了非常好的照顾,而且在求学的同时也参与了很多文化交流的活动。

What will happen between China and Britain in terms of collaboration in education?
中英在教育领域将开展哪些合作?

The China-UK Education Development Forum also witnessed the signing of several China-UK educational agreements. These included early education projects between Alpha Plus Group and Yango Group and British Early Education and Jiangsu Lv Guo Education Management Co., Ltd, and a school based project between Dulwich College and Shanghai Minhang Government.

中英教育发展论坛期间,两国教育机构达成了三项协议:中国阳光幼教集团、江苏绿国教育管理咨询有限公司将分别与英国顶尖的教育集团Alpha Plus Group和英国英式早教机构(BEE)签署早教发展方面的协议,而英国德威学校(Dulwich College)则与上海闵行区政府在学校项目上达成合作共识。

On the other hand, “Mathematics is one of the areas in which the UK tries to learn from China”, Vipul Bhargava stated. He made the point the mathematics is particularly utilized in the technology industry, for example, the gaming development area. The forum reviewed the China-UK mathematics teacher exchange program. The British Ministry of Education decided to invest 41 million pounds over the next four years to continue the program, which – promotes Chinese-style teaching in 8,000 primary schools, according to the British Consulate General in Shanghai.

另一方面,据英国驻沪总领事馆的消息,本届论坛回顾了中英数学教师的交流项目。英国教育部决定在今后四年投入4100万英镑,继续推进这个项目,在8000所小学推广中国式教学法。

“我们发现,上海的数学教育方法在科技行业得到非常好的运用,比如一些游戏类公司”,英国国际贸易部国际教育和教育科技业务专家Vipul  Bhargava表示,英国也在借鉴中国的教学方式,希望彼此取长补短,合作共赢。

Qin Li, Assistant Director for Education at DIT said that they came here not just to sell the English education brand, but also to find out the best framework for collaboration with Chinese colleagues acknowledging that both parties are to share best practices in terms of teaching and learning.

英国国际贸易部伦敦总部教育与技能署副总监李秦表示,此次中国之行并不仅仅是宣传英国的教育品牌,更重要的是找到好的合作框架与机制,并彼此分享一些最佳实践,无论是在教还是学的方面。

Currently there are two avenues for China-UK education collaboration, one is to open branch schools in China and the other is to open international schools using British curriculum, said Vipul Bhargava.

据英国国际贸易部国际教育和教育科技业务专家Vipul Bhargava介绍,目前中英教育合作主要有两种形式,一是英国院校在中国开设分校,通常是跟中国的教育机构合作。另一个则是国际学校,使用英国的教育制度、课程设置,或者聘请英国的咨询师或者顾问。

Derek Todd, Director of Operations and Finance St Albans reported, “It is important that both our countries educate people for the jobs that probably don’t exist now. We must educate them in such a way that they are prepared to cope with this reality”.

在中英教育合作上,英国圣奥尔本斯学校运营及财务部总监Derek  Todd认为前瞻性非常重要,“我们教育出来的学生将来可能能从事一些现在还不存在的职业,我们不希望我们教学生的一些方法和技术是十年前的,等他们毕业的时候已经用不上了。我们希望能够教他们方法,让他们成才的基础,将来无论遇到什么样的情况或者环境,都能够成才。” 

Vipul Bhargava also noted that the number of international schools in China is around 600, close to the United Arab Emirates, however this number is far less than that the population can support so there remains huge opportunities in the education market in China.

Vipul Bhargava特别指出,中国现有大约600多家国际学校及双语学校,相对于中国的地域范围及人口来说,比例还是非常小,这个数量与阿联酋的相近,可见中国国际教育的市场潜力巨大,中英合作潜力巨大。

Conversely, 5,900 UK students came to China to study in 2015, a 40% increase from 2012, according to the data provided by Anna Shotbolt, Head of Education and Skills at DIT, and First Secretary of the British Embassy in China.

另一方面,从英国来中国学习的人数近年来也持续增长。据英国大使馆一等秘书、英国国际贸易部教育技能署中国区总监Anna Shotbolt介绍,2015年,从英国到中国来学习的人数是5900人,从2012年到2015年增长了40%。

She also added that there will be a series of reciprocal education based exchanges and visits for both British and Chinese principals and administrative staff. Further, an international education exhibition will be held in Britain next January in which delegates from China will participate.

此外,Anna Shotbolt介绍说,接下来还将有一系列中英两国的院校之间的合作交流,包括英国学校校长来华考察,以及中国教育组织及院校的管理人员去英国考察。一月份将在英国举办英国国际教育展,到时候也会有中国的代表团参会。
