Busier and healthier food services in heat wave
By:Wu Qiong  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2017-07-24 11:10

As Shanghai experiences the hottest days of the year, more people are choosing to order takeaway food during lunch and dinner. Food and beverage online takeaway platforms, like Ele.me and Meituan, are receiving a huge number of orders.

According to statistics provided by Ele.me, one of China’s biggest online takeaway platforms, the number of orders received in Shanghai over the last two months has seen a 204% increase, compared with the same period last year. Shanghai people’s favorite picks are fast food, spicy hot pot, rice served with meat and vegetables, crayfish, hamburgers, rice noodles, and casseroles. Ele.me also told reporters that each food delivery worker receives up to eight orders per hour on peak days.

Along with the growth in online takeaway platforms, many private food shops and cooks have also seized the chance to attract clients by offering food services, even door-to-door services, for private parties and special events. However, as Zhang Lei, an official from Shanghai Municipal Food and Drug Administration, pointed out, several risks about food security lurk in the meals provided by those providers, many of who are operating businesses with no licenses or certificates. To solve this, authorities in Shanghai will crack down on those illicit workshops.
