The short-lived umbrella-sharing scheme has returned after a bumpy start. Hundreds of shared umbrellas have been popping up at Shanghai’s metro stations.
Starting from August 5, Mosun, an umbrella-sharing start-up, has begun to give out shared umbrellas to people at different stations along Metro Line 2. At the exits of these metro stations, people can find a giant white machine with a total of 48 umbrellas hanging on its racks. Users can rent one of them after installing the company’s app “Mosun” on their smartphone and paying a deposit of 39 Yuan, and the service is free of charge for the time being.
According to Huang Jianliang, the founder of Mosun, an automatic drying system in the machine helps ensure the umbrellas are dried after being returned.
The company reportedly plans to release another 50,000 umbrellas at more than 300 metro stations across Shanghai within the following three months.
However, as Huang said, some of the shared umbrellas might end up going missing, since the company cannot keep track of its products.
