Bai Xiang’en, China’s first female chief officer to make a voyage across the Arctic Ocean, gave a lecture at Shanghai Pudong Lingang No.1 Primary School on the afternoon of September 29.
Around 300 primary students, along with their parents, attended the lecture. In plain words, Professor Bai shared her story of sailing China’s icebreaker Xuelong (or Snow Dragon in English) and her wonderful adventure in the Antarctica.

“The Antarctica is a strange land for children who have limited knowledge of the world. Even for many well-informed adults, it is a remote and mysterious land. There are too many unknown things on the continent that are worth exploring,” said Bai.
Bai is currently an associate professor of Shanghai Maritime University. As an experienced officer of icebreaker Xuelong, she has participated in the revision of a science book titled “Marching towards the Antarctica” which is jointly compiled by Shanghai Maritime University and Shanghai Pudong Lingang No.1 Primary School.
