Shanghai to offer more unisex toilets
By:Wu Qiong  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2017-11-22 08:57

Shanghai has had more than 8,700 public toilets by last year, including over 250 unisex toilets, according to the Shanghai Youth Daily.

At a nationwide toilet innovation exposition which was held in mid-November, the Shanghai Urban Aesthetics and Environmental Quality Monitoring Center said that the city will build more smart toilets, genderless toilets and unisex toilets in the future.

Since 2014, Shanghai has been trialing unisex public toilets across the city. The unisex stalls in those toilets are more spacious than regular ones and each one is equipped with two flush toilets (one for adults and one for children), two sinks (one for adults and one for children), a child safety seat and a nappy changing table. The toilet stalls have been well received by citizens, as they have effectively reduced the inconvenience of people who take young children or elderly people to a toilet.

According to the new requirement of the Shanghai Urban Aesthetics and Environmental Quality Monitoring Center, newly built public toilets in the city shall be equipped with unisex stalls to meet the demands of many families. Apart from that, Shanghai is now working on smart toilets to reduce the waste of toilet paper and improve the efficiency of toilet facilities.
