On December 12 when most people were indulged in the online shopping extravaganza, Shanghai Tower, for the first time ever, lit up for a special social group—the left-behind children in the country.
Three days ahead of “Double 12 Day,” a charity auction was launched online, to provide a fundraising platform to support left-behind children in China’s Anhui Province. The auctioned goods were derivatives of a painting. Titled “Summer Dream,” the painting was created by a girl named Zhang Shuting. A few years ago, Zhang’s father passed away. To support the family, her mother had to leave their hometown in the remote Ta-pieh Mountains in Anhui, and came to work in Shanghai, leaving Zhang and her younger brother at home as left-behind children.
“Summer Dream” represents Zhang’s dream life. In the painting, there is a girl playing on a swing on a starry summer night. Around the girl are some colorful butterflies dancing in the air.
To make Zhang’s dream come true and help more left-behind children like her, a number of charitable organizations initiated an online auction from December 9 to 12. The raised money will be donated to the left-behind children in the underdeveloped Ta-pieh Mountains. Also, on the evening of December 12, Shanghai Tower, China’s tallest building, lit up for the kids, conveying people’s best wishes for them.
