China’s first 5G demonstration area, jointly established by China Telecom Corporation Shanghai Branch (hereinafter referred to as Shanghai Telecom) and the Shanghai Hongqiao Business District Administrative Committee, was officially launched on May 17, World Telecommunications Day.

At the launch ceremony for the 5G demonstration area, the first batch of innovative applications based on 5G was announced: 5G+VR, 5G+drones and 5G+8K (8K display resolution).

In order to turn Hongqiao into a world-class business district, Shanghai Telecom will complete the construction of a 5G network in three phases and promote a “Smart Hongqiao” project by working with the Shanghai Hongqiao Business District.

A 5G base station, located in the business district, has been put in place and will serve the first China International Import Expo that will take place this November. During the grand event, 5G+8K technology in public areas and hotel rooms will showcase the world’s fastest Internet speed and highest resolution capacity for guests from all over the world. At the venue (the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai)), 5G and VR technology will be integrated to such an extent that exhibitions can be showcased online and allow netizens to make virtual visits. Opening exhibitions up to a wider audience by providing fast and high-quality Internet access to as wide a range of people as possible, will certainly bolster Shanghai’s position as a global telecoms innovator and make the city even more attractive to business people, both international and local.
