Visitors will have an opportunity to see hundreds of exhibits previously enshrined in the former Shanghai Museum of the Royal Asiatic Society, ranging from natural history, anthropology, archeology and art. Through a combination of science, culture, art and history, the exhibition allows the audience to explore the history of Chinese museums and the cultural origins of Shanghai as a city.

Apart from specimens and cultural relics, the show will be presented through various other forms, such as replicas of wildlife habitats, classic paintings, pictures, and video clips. Visitors can also get to know more about the exhibits through mobile apps.

When it comes to the venue of the show, the Shanghai History Museum is a distinctive neoclassical building in a European style, which is representative of Shanghai’s cultural heritage and consistent with the architectural style of the former Shanghai Museum of the Royal Asiatic Society; thus giving the audience an immersive experience and reminding them of the golden era of the former Shanghai Museum in the 1930s.

Taking the opportunity of this special exhibition, the 1st Art and Science Symposium jointly hosted by the Shanghai Museum and Shanghai Science and Technology Museum will be held from July 17 to 19. With the theme of “museum spirit in metropolises”, experts and academics will discuss the early history of Chinese museums, naturalists and museum collections, museum spirit and urban culture.

Exhibition information:

Duration: July 17 - October 21
