After a three-year rating procedure, Zhuguang Road Station of Shanghai Metro Line 17 has achieved the LEED Silver certification. This is Asia’s first LEED certification issued in the metro station industry.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), one of the most popular green building certification programs used worldwide, includes a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes, and neighborhoods.
According to Ma Zhongzheng, deputy general manager and chief engineer of the company operating the construction of Line 17, in the past, LEED certification was mostly for commercial office buildings and residential buildings. Since most of the subway stations are underground and have natural disadvantages in terms of ventilation and lighting, dozens of technical conferences have been held to discuss the control of the whole process of construction.
In the future, more metro stations such as Fengpu Station of Line 5 and all stations of Line 18 will be expected to achieve the LEED certification. So now some Metro users can look forward to being able to not only travel in one of the most environmentally-friendly manners, but also experience an eco-friendly environment when boarding or alighting.
