Spruced up trash cans raise eco awareness

Students of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts of Shanghai University have been taking part in community service activities. Recently, to raise community residents’ awareness about garbage sorting and environmental protection, the young artists have designed some unique classified trash cans for the Guangzhong Road Sub-district in Hongkou District.

In Hejiazhai Residential Area, people can find two sets of classified trash cans. One set features colorful garbage cans with intuitive images teaching people to separate their rubbish correctly. In a playful way, the art project aims to exert a positive impact on people’s behavior by making garbage sorting an interesting experience. Thus in the long run, people can develop the habit of garbage sorting.

The other set of trash cans are set beside a pair of giant convex mirrors. Called “the Eyes of the Earth”, the distinctive art installations intend to make people be aware of their behavior and foster a sense of responsibility to protect the planet.

From now on, as more residents get to know about garbage sorting, waste disposal will become something to take more seriously.

So far, color-coded waste bins have been placed across Shanghai to implement a new trash sorting policy. According to a draft regulation, citizens in Shanghai will face a fine of up to 200 yuan if they are found placing their garbage in the wrong trash cansduring waste disposal.
