The new fifth-generation cellular network technology - known as 5G for short - was deployed at the highest building in China on August 2, 2019.

Last Friday, the nation's three major phone operators - Shanghai Telecom, Shanghai Mobile and Shanghai Unicom - signed a joint contract with Shanghai Tower and officially launched their 5G deployment in the tallest skyscraper in the city. With a height of 632 meters, it will become the first super high-rise building in China to implement 5G, reflecting the high level and fast speed of 5G development in Shanghai.

Shanghai Tower is located in China's financial center, Lujiazui in Pudong, which is home to many high-rises such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower (468 meters high), Jinmao Tower (420.5 meters high) and the Shanghai World Financial Centre (492 meters high). The development of super high-rise buildings in this area is also a microcosm of the development of urban construction in Shanghai and China at large.

It is said that the three major operators have now completed the pilot 5G deployment in Shanghai Tower’s 119-storey sightseeing hall. The “5G+XR Creative Science and Technology Exhibition” being held there has become the first 5G application scenario of landmark cultural tourism.

Through 5G deployment, the three major operators will give full play to their respective advantages and make full use of 5G technology to provide more convenience to the offices, hotels, exhibitions, tourism and other businesses housed in the Shanghai Tower.
