People come to cities to make a living, and live in cities for a better life. Shanghai, because of its inclusiveness and aspiration, has attracted more than its fair share of expats who have fallen in love with and made contributions to the city. The municipal government of Shanghai on September 12 conferred Magnolia Silver Awards to 58 foreigners in recognition of their diligent work and contributions to the city's development.

The laureates come from 18 nations and presently work in a variety of industries including economy and trade, scientific research, finance, education, culture, healthcare and sports.

“The award is not for me, but for Ruijin Hospital and all the contributors to the Journal of Diabetes,” said Dr. Zachary Bloomgarden, a clinical professor whose connections with Shanghai began in 1983. In 2009, together with Dr. Ning Guang from Ruijin Hospital, he co-founded the Journal of Diabetes in Shanghai, which is China’s first English journal dedicated to diabetes and indexed by SCIE. Since then, Chinese and Western researchers have been encouraged to exchange their views through that platform, working together for people all over the world to better understand the disease.

Although not a resident in Shanghai, Dr. Bloomgarden is deeply in love with the city. Every time he returns, he visits different places to enjoy the city.“I love Shanghai, although I am a New Yorker. For me, Shanghai has a unique energy and beauty.”

Sylvain Laurent is also a winner of the Magnolia Award. About seven years ago, he came to Shanghai, which, in his eyes, is the center of Asia. In 2012, he decided to move the headquarters of Dassault Systèmes from Tokyo to Shanghai, with a firm belief that there would be a constant and rapid growth of the Chinese market. As he said, Shanghai has many universities, as the younger generation is vital to technology companies like Dassault Systèmes. By bringing 3D and simulation technology from France to China, he and his team have contributed to the PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) of China’s first home-built passenger jet C919 and the upgrading of Chinese manufacturing enterprises such as Huawei, CRRC and Lenovo.

In his spare time, Sylvain Laurent loves cooking. As a Chinese food lover, he also tries to mix Chinese cuisine with French cooking. He and his wife even created a French-language magazine to share their life stories in China with their friends back in France. As a person who does not mind being busy, he said he loves the dynamic of the city and the passion of its people.

Named after Shanghai’s official city flower, the Magnolia Award was first launched in 1989. To date, 1,500 foreigners have received the award. On the evening of September 12, a charity concert was held in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the award. The performance was delivered by the Shanghai City Symphony Orchestra, and autistic teenagers from the Shanghai Angels Salon, a Shanghai non-profit group which helps autistic children and young people fit in better in society.
