Serving spoons and chopsticks offered in restaurants
By:Wu Qiong   |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2020-03-03 10:10

Shanghai’s restaurants have begun to offer serving spoons and chopsticks, as an answer to a call in the city’s catering industry.

Last week, 100 restaurants across Shanghai advocated the use of serving utensils, as it is a critical point for the control and prevention of the COVID-19.

Chinese people often eat communally and share their dishes with others. The new system suggests adding separate chopsticks and spoons for serving when people dine together. Such a change of etiquette allows diners to avoid using their own chopsticks to pick food from the same dishes, and therefore reduces the chances of transmission of many diseases.

Many restaurants adopted the policy after the Municipal Office for Civilized Society published the proposal, which also encourages the public to use separate utensils for shared dishes at home.

According to Qu Qi, a person in charge of a vegan restaurant in Xuhui, a sign has been put up on the tables to inform people of the importance of using serving utensils, since eating in was resumed on February 21. The waiters and waitresses are also trained to supply a separate spoon or pair of chopsticks for the diners. So far, the service has been well received by the majority of the public.

This will be a long-term measure, said Huang Jingjing, head waiter of another restaurant. In the future, each diner on the table will have their own serving chopsticks and spoons so as to prevent sharing of any manner of viruses and bacteria.
