As the weather gets hotter, FamilyMart has joined in a campaign launched by government agencies to provide free shelters and cooling supplies for environmental sanitation workers. On July 28th and 29th, about 54,000 environmental sanitation workers in Shanghai could go to any FamilyMart conveniencestore to get their supplies. Meanwhile, FamilyMart has also promised to obey the rules of refuse classification and take responsibility for keeping the space around their stores clean, which helps preserve the work of these sanitation workers.

Statistics have shown that the environmental sanitation workers in Shanghai have to deal with more than 20,000 tons of household waste every day and are responsible for cleaning up nearly 207 million square meters of space. They have contributed a lot to the clean and tidy city that we see everyday. Right now there are more than 6,000 different sites in Shanghai offering these workers similar services and supplies in summer like FamilyMart.“We have established these sites to solve problems like where sanitation workers shouldrest, drink, eat or charge their mobile devices. Many charitable organizations have taken part in this campaign and we are expecting more people to join us in the future. These sites and actions really make our city better,” said Xiao Longgen, chairmen of the Shanghai Administration Department of Afforestation and City Appearance.

The campaign started in 2017 when 1,500 FamilyMart convenience stores in Shanghai first provided environmental sanitation workers with drinking water, rest areas and food heating services. This year the services have been upgraded.“Given that sanitation workers have to work outside in high temperatures for a long time, we also offer them various kinds of cooling supplies for free so that they can walk into our store anytime to use them,”one of the store owners said.

Amanager of FamilyMart said,“For this year’s campaign, we would like to call on the community to handle their rubbish properly so as to reduce the labour intensity of sanitation workers. Increasing our environmental awareness is also the key to protecting our living environment.”
