Shanghai is a huge city with more and more popular places to visit. However, the illustrator PK prefers to focus on the people of the city and their daily life activities, so those big landmarks are not included in the painting."I prefer to find something interesting about a person, a family," he said.
PK's illustrations of Shanghai's urban life have attracted people's attention and resonance. His works focus on people, using simple and soft lines and colors to depict ordinary people living in Shanghai, including people making egg dumplings in the kitchen, old people walking and talking in the alley, middle-aged people and young people chatting or silent on the subway. The everyday Shanghainese in the picture make the people living in this city look kind and precious.
PK, whose real name is Peng Kai, was born and raised in Shanghai. He has liked painting since he was a child. After seeing the works of He Youzhi, Zhang Leping and other painters, he picked up a pen to sketch the characters. He studied in Shanghai Huashan Art School, learned graphic design in college, and became a senior designer in the Internet industry after graduation. He moved from being a designer to an illustrator because he loved to draw.
This year, PK's works, reflecting the taste of Shanghai and thinking about urban life, have been recognized by more people. When asked about the typical temperament of Shanghainese, he once said three things: tolerance, etiquette and civility, and a sense of distance. The characters he chooses to depict, the scenes he sets, and the details he carefully includes, show these qualities quietly. Different characters' interpretation of the city's unique temperament gives these works plenty of interest and vitality.
