TEHRAN, April 12 (Xinhua) -- A Syrian lawmaker said on Thursday he did not believe the U.S. would attack Syria over the chemical attack accusations against Syrian troops.

"I don't think (U.S. President Donald) Trump would attack Syria," Nashaat al-Atrash said in an interview with Iran's Tasnim news agency.

Trump threatened on Wednesday to launch a missile attack on Syria in response to the alleged chemical attack by Syrian troops in the rebel-held Douma district on the outskirts of Syrian capital Damascus. Syria has strongly denied the accusations.

Event if Trump did, al-Atrash added, it could not disrupt the rapport among Syrian people, army and government.

The recent military victories Syrian army gained in Douma and elsewhere in Eastern Ghouta were the main reasons behind Trump's threat to attack Syria, al-Atrash said.

He pointed out that former U.S. President Barack Obama also threatened to take military actions against Syria over similar allegations, but did not carry out his threat.
