BAGHDAD, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Air Force carried out airstrikes on a position of Islamic State (IS) extremist group inside Syria near the Iraqi border, the Iraqi military said on Monday.

The Iraqi F-16 jets bombarded a two-storey building where 30 extremist militants were inside for a meeting of the group's leaders, and totally destroyed it in Susa area in eastern Syria, a statement issued by the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) said, without saying when the airstrike took place.

The airstrikes were ordered by Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, who is also the commander-in-chief of the Iraqi forces, based on accurate intelligence reports, the statement added.

The airstrikes are part of the continued preemptive airstrikes against IS militants inside Syria launched by Iraqi fighter jets.

Late in 2017, former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi officially declared full liberation of Iraq from IS after Iraqi forces recaptured all the areas once seized by the extremist group.
