WASHINGTON, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Jerrold Nadler, chairman of U.S. House Judiciary Committee, filed a civil lawsuit Wednesday to enforce a subpoena for testimony from former White House counsel Don McGahn over his panel's probe into possible obstruction and other abuses of power by President Donald Trump.

Nadler issued a subpoena for documents and testimony from McGahn on April 22, which was defied later by McGahn at the Trump administration's direction.

Lawyers for the panel's Democrats described McGahn as both "critical" and "the most important fact witness" during a call with reporters Wednesday before the lawsuit was filed.

The Democratic counsels also announced Wednesday that they have reached an agreement to review documents subpoenaed from McGahn, said a TheHill news daily report.

Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller interviewed McGahn extensively during his 22-month probe into possible obstruction of justice by the president.
