JOHANNESBURG, June 15 (Xinhua) -- With over 10 women who have been brutally killed in the country since the start of June, President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday condemned their killings, saying the violence was shocking.

"Like all South Africans, I have been deeply disturbed by a surge over the last few days in the murder of young women at the hands of men. These are shocking acts of inhumanity that have no place in our society," Ramaphosa said in his weekly newsletter.

The recent killing of young women across the country has left many dismayed.

The president called on the youth to play a leading role regarding the eradication of violence against women. He said that young people played a crucial role against apartheid government, noting today's young people must fight again the society's ills today.

"Youth-led civic activism, awareness raising and peer counselling are vital tools in our efforts to eradicate gender-based violence from society," Ramaphosa said.

"While this needs society-wide action, I call on young men in particular to take up the struggle against gender-based violence.

"Unless we end the war that is being waged against South African women, the dream of a new society will remain elusive." he said. Enditem
