DAMASCUS, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Israel launched several airstrikes on Syria's military sites in several parts of the Arab country overnight, state news agency SANA reported.

Israel started the attacks at military bases in southern and eastern Syria on Tuesday evening, killing two soldiers and wounding four others.

The strikes targeted a military site in the area of Kabajeb west of the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, and one in the Sukhneh area in the remote eastern countryside of Homs Province, as well as a third in the Salkhad area in the southern countryside of the southern province of Sweida, said the report.

"Hostile aerial targets" fired the missiles, triggering off the Syrian air defenses, a military source was quoted as saying.

After midnight, Israel renewed the strikes on military sites in Saboura and Salamiyeh in the countryside of Hama Province in central Syria.

The Syrian air defenses intercepted a large number of missiles, the report noted.

Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Israeli shelling targeted the military sites that belong to "the Iranian militias" in the countryside of Sweida and Deir al-Zour.

The Syrian air defenses responded to the attacks, the Britain-based watchdog added.

In Hama, Israeli warplanes struck Iranian positions in the eastern countryside of Hama, it said, adding weapon depots were targeted, causing intense explosions.

The tension between Israel and Iran in Syria have escalated over the past months, as Israel accuses Iran of entrenching itself near the Israeli border.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria against Iranian targets and convoys transporting weapons to Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Lebanese militia.
