NEW DELHI, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the country's first-ever driverless train.

The train belonging to the Delhi Metro would run on the "Magenta Line" between the Janakpuri West station in Delhi and the Botanical Garden station in neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation tweeted that Modi flagged off the driverless train on Monday morning through video conferencing, "heralding a new era for the Delhi Metro."

Speaking on the occasion, Modi said the launch of driverless train in Delhi was an attempt to make urban development future ready.

"Preparing the country for future needs is an important responsibility of governance," he said.

Modi said in 2014 only five cities had metro rail and today it was available in as many as 18 cities. "By the year 2025 we are going to expand it to more than 25 cities," he added.

He also said the metro train was no longer just a medium of public transport but a great way to reduce pollution and traffic jam. Enditem
