Grandma told: return hongbao
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2017-02-14 02:46

A 78-year-old woman who took her grandson’s 45,000 yuan (US$5,535) hongbao has been ordered by the Pudong New Area People’s Court to give it back.

The court said the grandmother, surnamed Shi, opened a bank account for the boy, nicknamed Taotao in 2009 when he was three to deposit gift money.

Hongbao is a money gift given for birthdays or special occasions such as Spring Festival.

In July, 2014, Taotao’s parents divorced and custody was granted to his mother.

Shi believed that she and Taotao would drift apart because of the divorce and decided to get the money back, court said.

Taotao’s mother found it and brought Shi to the court.

The court ruled the money belonged to Taotao.
