A woman who killed her unfaithful husband with a hammer was sentenced yesterday to 14 years behind bars for murder.
According to the People’s court of Minhang District, the woman surnamed Li developed mild depression because her husband surnamed Wang had maintained a long-time extramarital affair and had two children with his mistress.
Wang intended to buy a house for his mistress, which was the last straw for Li.
In the wee hours of June 30, 2016, she beat her husband on the head with a hammer while he was asleep. He died at the scene.
She then called Wang’s sister, telling her what she had done, and cut her wrists in an attempt to commit suicide, the court said.
When Wang’s relatives rushed to the scene, they saw Wang lying motionless on the bed, bleeding from his head, while Li was groaning alongside.
As Li had admitted guilt and Wang’s relatives had forgiven her, the court gave her a lighter sentence.
