The Shanghai Communique (also known as the Joint Communique of the United States of America and the People’s Republic of China) was issued at the hotel’s Grand Hall in February 1972. Former US president Richard Nixon also stayed in this hotel on his “ice-breaking” trip to China in 1972, opening a significant chapter in Sino-US relations. Both Nixon’s visit to China and the Shanghai Communique became a milestone in the two countries’ joint history, laying a foundation for the establishment of their diplomatic relations and further development of bilateral relations.
