The fifth stop of the journey of culture and humanities. Established in 1846 as Richards’ Hotel, it is China’s first hotel built by a Western merchant after 1843. In 1907, the hotel was expanded into a neoclassical Victorian Baroque building. It was the most luxurious Western merchant hotel in Shanghai at that time and was once described as one of the most famous hotels of the world. The century-old hotel has housed big names such as Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, Ulysses S. Grant, Colin Powell, and Edgar Snow.
