Shot in black-and-white, and set against the background of the Cold War in the late 1940s and 1950s - a bleak post-war era in Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris - the film depicts the love story in tough times between Wiktor, a handsome pianist, composer and conductor, and Zula (Joanna Kulig), a singer and dancer. They met and fell in love when Wiktor and his team were touring the countryside in search of folk-based musical talent. Although they parted and reconnected again and again, they treated each other as their greatest love throughout the trajectory of their lives.
