Quake Hits Sumatra Island
A large earthquake struck off Indonesia's Sumatra Island in the Andaman Sea late last night, and the US Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 8.7. It occurred at 11:09pm at a depth of nearly 30 kilometers.

On March 30, a woman walks past ruined houses with her children in Gunung Sitoli after an earthquake on the Indonesian island of Nias on Tuesday. Survivors combed the rubble of buildings looking for loved ones as reports emerged of additional deaths on a nearby island group.
