Yanxi Palace, one of the six eastern palaces in the inner city, was first built in 1420 (the 18th year of the reign of Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty) with the name of Changshou Palace. In 1535, it was renamed Yanqi Palace. During the Qing Dynasty, the name became Yanxi and the palace underwent a renovation in 1686. Both in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was the residence for the emperors’ concubines.
