In the 25th year of Qing Daoguang (1845), Yanxi Palace caught fire and almost all the buildings were burned down. In 1909, a three-storey western-style building, known as the Crystal Palace, was built on the original site of Yanxi Palace. Due to a lack of money, the palace was not completed by the winter of 1911 when construction was forced to stop.
